14th Sep 21 – A shocking suicide statistic


Today I was saddened to learn that 40% of deaths in males under 40 in the U.K. are from suicides. Unfortunately this trend has been accelerating as opposed to getting better. What’s so frustrating is that these are preventable deaths. I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by people that I trust, and can open up to. This enables me to get something of my chest before it becomes a bigger problem.

Having discussed this issue with Mental Health Aberdeen today, it seems that the best thing we can do if we start to develop mental health issues, is to speak to someone early. The longer we leave it, the bigger the issue becomes. 

Having suffered from depression a few years ago, I know that it feels like there is no end in sight. I felt like I’d always be depressed, and with that, what’s the point in continuing to live? I can speak from experience when I say that it will pass. Things to get better.

We can all help one another. What I learnt today is that we should look for changes in someone’s behaviour. If you notice a change, ask them if everything is ok. Ask with compassion, and don’t necessarily accept a simple yes as gospel. You may need to ask a few times. If they’re not ok, be someone they can talk to and refer them to all the great services out there that specialise in helping people with mental health issues.

I have, and probably will always have, a very busy mind. What I find really helps is getting out into nature and going for long walks. My mind quite quickly becomes quiet, and calm.
